Parent Workshops

Tutoring
Currently students receive more than 400 hours of tutoring per week. Students from a College of Education Reading Education class at Florida International University tutored students one-on-one in reading, providing over 700 volunteer hours of tutoring each fall. Additionally thirty paid tutors from Miami Dade Community College and FIU work one-on-one and in small groups to coach students in math, reading, general studies and FCAT strategies.

Library and Technology Access
GEAR UP funds enable each middle school to keep the library media center open for two additional hours after school four days per week for homework help, Internet use, book check out, research and access to print and electronic resources. Parents are encouraged to participate and resources of interest to them are being developed.

After School Enrichment
Intramural sports and arts activities are scheduled after school hours. Students have participated in the regional competition of the Black History and Culture Brain Bowl and plans are being developed to offer the opportunity for all District Middle Schools to compete in a similar activity each spring sponsored by GEAR UP EXPRESS.

Summer Program
A four week summer program was held for rising seventh graders this summer at Miami Dade Community College Medical Center Campus and Barry University. In collaboration with the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) Program students learned about health careers and engaged in actual "research" in the medical labs. Morning academic programs were complimented by afternoon enrichment activities.

Social Services and Counseling
Two Social work interns have been contracted to work at each school with the Student Services Teams to provide home visits, group and one-on-one counseling for students and families in need.

Medical Services
Also in collaboration with the Area Health Education Center (AHEC) A part-time nurse practitioner has begun working in each school providing health education, immunizations and health screenings on the school site.

Mentoring
Social Mentoring and College Coaching: Thirty college coaches have been recruited, screened and trained to mentor students in social skills, motivation, positive attitude development, and creating an awareness of the importance of academic success.
Career Mentoring: Twelve community professionals/managers from the Black Executive Forum have been recruited to provide career mentoring, professional role modeling, job awareness, and guidance in making life choices.

Professional Development for Teachers
Faculty Coaches: Two university faculty members serve as faculty coaches to provide onsite advising of teachers, assessment of professional and student needs, modeling of lessons and dissemination of best practices in Reading and Mathematics. GEAR UP EXPRESS funds also pay a supplement to allow a math and reading leader in each school time to support colleagues and disseminate best practices.

Central EXPRESS News
A quarterly newspaper, published with Central EXPRESS resources, includes a GEAR UP EXPRESS page describing activities and stories related to GEAR UP.

Community Resource Centers
Funded by a grant from Washington Mutual Bank, Westview and Madison Middle schools have created a Community Resource Center designed as a welcoming place for parents to receive information about any topic of interest. On-line computers provide Internet access and the Community Information Specialist in each school provides guidance about the GED, social services, ESOL, college admission as well as a host of other topics.

Student Clubs
Student clubs for after school activities have been created at Madison Middle School. A book club gives students an opportunity to engage in and discuss their recreational reading and a math club encourages students to appreciate mathematics by making it fun.

Comics Corner
Originally funded by a tutor who recognized that students were willingly reading comic books, a Comics Corner has now been set-up in the Westview Middle School media center. Students are encouraged to read and share comic books as a means of increasing their reading ability.
